Council committees to meet Wednesday to discuss budget, audit and traffic light

The finance and street and safety committees of the Hillsboro City Council will meet Wednesday to discuss the 2012 budget and audit information, as well as a traffic light request.
The street and safety committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. to review a request for a traffic turn signal. During council's December meeting, a representative from the Hillsboro Save-A-Lot asked that the city consider putting in a left-turn signal at the intersection of Harry Sauner Road and North High Street.
The finance committee will meet at 5:45 p.m., or immediately following the street and safety committee. The two agenda items include the 2012 budget and to review performance audit information.
The finance committee had met with auditors from Ohio Auditor of State David Yost's Office on Nov. 7 and discussed the options available and how to fund a possible performance audit with the office. The city can apply for financial assistance for the audit at the beginning of the year, and Pence said that currently the committee and council need to determine the scope of the audit they would like to have and what the city can afford. For city performance audits, auditors can examine practices and department functions citywide or take a very narrow look at a small number of departments, based on the individual city's need. Finance committee chairperson Pete Pence previously told council that applications for funding would be due sometime in the first part of the year.
During the December council meeting, former Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink said that he would advise council to finalize contracts between the city and area townships for fire and EMS before they move forward with a performance audit. Zink said that he didn't want the city to have to pay someone to come in and inform them the city was not charging enough for EMS. Zink suggested the contracts be resolved before the city moves forward with obtaining a performance audit.
