Commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeremy Shaffer proclaimed the month of May as Community Action Month in Highland County.

Highland County Community Action Organization, Inc. Executive Director Julia Wise accepted the proclamation with other departmental representatives in attendance.

Wise told commissioners Community Action is coming up on its 50th anniversary nationwide. The program was part of former President Lyndon Johnson's "war on poverty."

Locally, Highland County Community Action is a nonprofit organization with a 15-member board.

Community Action will hold a bus tour beginning 8 a.m. Thursday, May 9, with stops at each of the HCCAO sites in Highland County.
