Commissioners proclaim Oct. 12 as CROP Hunger Walk Day in Highland County

The Highland County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Saturday, Oct. 12 as CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walk Day in Highland County during the Wednesday, Oct. 2 board meeting.

This year's annual Highland County CROP Walk will take place on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., with registration at 1:30 p.m. It starts and ends at the Hillsboro First United Methodist parking lot and will include a walk through the historic uptown Hillsboro business district.

The local walk's goals are 100 walkers and to raise $2,000. Twenty-five percent of donations will go to Highland County food pantries, including Friendly Village Community Center, Greenfield Area Christian Center, Highland County Homeless Shelter, New Life Ministries and Samaritan Outreach Services.

The event is held in conjunction with Church World Service.

Church World Service was established in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, when 17 religious denominations came together to form an agency whose mission is to "feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless."

After meeting with representatives for the 2013 CROP Walk, commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeremy Shaffer passed seven resolutions.

• An additional appropriation for the Engineer's Office in the amount of $26,270;

• A modification in the Probation Department in the amount of $2,000;

• A modification in the Probation Department for Jail Diversion in the amount of $3,350;

• A modification in the Help Me Grow MIECHV budget;

• A modification in the Auditor's Department to County Miscellaneous Funds for $2,000;

• A resolution declaring Highland County property on North High St. not needed for public use and the authorization of a sale of real property; and

• A resolution authorizing a contractual agreement with Fire House Square Partners, owned by Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings, for $42,000, following his bid for the Highland County Annex Building.

In other business, commissioners approved contract extensions for Maximum Consulting Services, Inc. and Cross Management Consulting Services. Commissioners rescheduled a meeting with Heather Gibson and Danielle Ratcliff, originally scheduled for Oct. 2, and now scheduled for Oct. 9.
