Commissioners proclaim Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
Highland County Commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeremy Shaffer proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month during their March 5 board meeting.
Nathan Boatman, lead support specialist and Special Olympics coordinator for the Highland County Board of DD and Hills and Dales Training Center, accepted the proclamation along with Randy Rogers, Randy Heaton and John Tafoya.
Boatman mentioned several special events planned throughout the month of March, including the annual balloon launch at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6 from the Highland County Courthouse.
Other scheduled activities include:
• March 13 – Wildcats versus Staff basketball game at 1 p.m.
• March 15 – DD in the Fashion Spotlight, Georgia’s Bridal Formal Wear, 6:30 p.m.
• March 22 – Special Olympics Fundraiser at Highland Lanes, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
• March 24-28 – Spirit Week.
• Movie day at Star Cinemas to be announced.

Mission statement
The mission of Hills and Dales Training Center is to:
Ensure the availability of programs, services and support that assist eligible individuals with developmental disabilities in choosing and achieving a life of increased capabilities.
Promote and facilitate the movement of individuals from segregated facility-based programs, such that they live and work in integrated natural settings within the community.
Support the families and caregivers of these individuals in achieving this objective.

Resolutions
• Commissioners also approved the following resolutions, all by a 3-0 vote:
• A request by the Common Pleas Court for funds to be set up for Juvenile Indigent Drivers Interlock and Alcohol Treatment Fund and set up line item Other Expenses.
• A request by the Highland County Board of DD for appropriation from unappropriated funds to Board of DD Fund for $36,617.48 and a request for transfer from Board of DD Transfers Out to Construction Debt Ret. for $36,617.48.
• A request by the Probation Department for a budget modification to Prosecutorial Diversion Budget.
