Colony to host international music series

The Colony Theatre will host an International Music Series presentation featuring Mauvais Sort. The performance will be on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 7 p.m. The concert is free and is sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council. Exceptional folk music needs no translation, as evidenced by Mauvais Sort’s international popularity. Translated roughly to “Bad spell,” Mauvais Sort hails from the city of Québec in Canada and features an eclectic mix of folk, rock and pop music. Take the freewheeling jams of Québec’s electrifying folk-dance tradition and crank up the voltage: the result is Mauvais Sort. Lauded for the last decade as one of Canada’s top folk groups, this Québec outfit pumps up traditional jigs of La Belle Province with a tantalizing taste of world-beat rhythms. Whether you call it Francophone fusion or Folk’n’Roll, the effect is still the same: a heel kicking exercise in joie de vivre that has started parties at hundreds of shows across the world.
Watch Patrick Giroux’s blistering fiddle fretwork, the jaw-dropping finger work of Stéphanie Richard on the accordion, and Guillaume Côté’s mastery of both jazz and rock drumming. Multi-talented founder Nicolas Geoffroy sings, dances, plays guitar and even drums on a stomp box with his feet, adding even more rhythmic drive to the group’s performance. They have received many awards for their work, including from the Canadian Folk Music Awards Group of the Year.
Their fifth recording, Droit devant, brings together fine writing about contemporary Québec with lovely interpretations of traditional songs. Through their feverish rhythms and ear-pleasing melodies, Mauvais Sort wants to turn you into a dancing fool. Chances are good they will. There will be three performances on Friday, Oct. 7. This is part of a community outreach program. The first performance will be held at Hillsboro High School for students and staff members at the High School. Southern State Community College is the next stop on the tour with a performance at 3 p.m. The last stop for the evening will be at Alley 21 at 7:30 p.m. Both of these performances are open to the public and free
