Members of a Southern Ohio civil war group, along with Highland County residents, turned out Saturday to honor the last county survivor of the civil war, and to memorialize his grave with a plaque.
Local Residents Mr. and Mrs. Dick Nicols, Jack Walker, and Jennifer West attended a ceremony honoring Pvt. Michael Austin Garrett, Highland County’s Last Civil War Veteran. He was born on March 27, 1847 and died on May 23, 1945.
Sgt. Enderlin Camp, of Chillicothe, a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) conducted a plaque Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Prospect Cemetery, state Route 73 south.
Prior to this event, Garrett was not identified on his grave as a Civil War Veteran. He joined the 175th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on Oct. 11, 1864, and fought in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville, Tenn. Pvt Garrett was mustered out on June 27, 1865.
After his service, Garrett became a successful farmer and cattle dealer in the Hillsboro area. The Garrett Farm at Belfast totaled over 1,100 acres for many years. At the age of 90, he was still farming over 500 acres.
Michael married Mary Haig in 1869. They were blessed with 7 children, and a happy 67 year marriage.
