Chuck Middleton sworn in as interim sheriff

Longtime Highland County sheriff deputy Chuck Middleton was sworn in as the interim Highland County sheriff by Judge Kevin Greer during a special meeting of the Highland County Board of Commissioners Friday, Nov. 15.

Judge Greer called the appointment of Middleton "an excellent choice" by commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeremy Shaffer.

Horst, a former county sheriff, made the motion to appoint Middleton. After a second by Shaffer, commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the appointment.

Middleton succeeds Sheriff Ron Ward, who announced his resignation at an Oct. 21 board meeting in order to accept a position with Hillsboro City Schools. Ward's resignation is effective Nov. 16, 2013 at midnight.

Commissioners asked Highland County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Chuck Middleton if he would accept an interim appointment as sheriff during the Oct. 21 meeting.

According to Ward, Middleton has been involved in the day-to-day operations of the Highland County Sheriff's Office for several years.

Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins said the county commissioners may appoint an interim sheriff for a period of between five and 45 days. After that period, the Highland County Republican Party Central Committee may appoint an interim sheriff through Dec. 31, 2014.

There will be a vote for the next sheriff during the May 2014 primary election.
