Child sustains facial injuries in dog attack
The Greenfield Police Department says a 3-year-old child sustained serious facial injuries after she was attacked by a dog at an area home.
Patrolman Jason Havens of the GPD said the department responded to a call in the 200 block of South Fourth Street in the village on April 28 at approximately 5:11 p.m.
"The squad (from Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District) was dispatched due to a juvenile female being bitten in the face by a large, mixed breed dog," Havens said. "We were told it was a trained guard dog."
It was not immediately clear the circumstances that led up to the child being bitten, Havens said.
"The girl was bit on the face and she received injuries to her lip and hand," he said. "She was transported to Children's Hospital in Columbus where she underwent surgery for her injuries."
No charges have been filed in the incident, and it remains under investigation.
"The dog was removed from the home and is currently being held at the Highland County Dog Pound, for health reasons," Havens said. "The dog will be contained for at least a week, and reports will be sent to the health department."
What happens to the animal will depend on its behavior, and test and observation results in the next seven days.
