Board of elections preps for Nov. 8

With the Nov. 8 general election two weeks away, the Highland County Board of Elections said that preparations and poll worker training are ongoing, but that they expect a relatively typical election night.
Steve Witham, of the Highland County Board of Elections, said that just over 300 voters have turned out since early voting began on Oct. 4.
"That may pick up closer to the election, and if (various groups) start doing voter drives," Witham said. "Off-year elections usually don't have a massive turnout. Sometimes there will be contested raises that bring people out, but with off-years there are so many unopposed races that it doesn't carry the interest. We, of course, would love to see voter turnout at 100 percent."
Witham said that the volunteer staffing is essential to the office for each election.
"We have a good, solid volunteer staff that has helped us out tremendously," Witham said. "I don't know how these other offices do it when they don't have volunteers and have just a few staff members, to keep up with the notices that have to be sent out, and all the day-to-day housekeeping stuff."
The board of elections office, located at the Hi-TECH Center in Hillsboro, and is open for early voting Hours are as follows: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, 8:30 a.m. - 9 p.m.; Fridays, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; and the Saturday before the election (Nov. 5), 9 a.m. - noon. On Nov. 8, the polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
With elections taking place in each of the 17 townships, and contested mayoral races in Hillsboro, Lynchburg, Lessburg and Highland, the following is a breakdown of what will appear on the ballots for offices in each precinct:
City of Hillsboro
One candidate will be chose for each of the following:
Mayor: Drew Hastings (R), and John Levo (R)
Law Director: Fred Beery
Auditor: Gary Lewis
Municipal Court Judge: David McKenna
Village of Greenfield
Three candidates are to be chosen for the council at large, however only two candidates are running. The third council member will be chosen by the village council in January. Robert Bergstrom and Chris Borreson will be on the ballot.

One candidate will be chosen as mayor and two candidates will be chosen for council
Highland:
Mayor: Jeremy Kibbey, and Matthew Miller.
Leesburg:
