A fire leveled a pole barn in the area of East Berrysville Road and Pleasant Road Friday evening, just before 6:30 p.m.

According to acting Chief Jeff Martin of Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, the station received the call around 6:20 p.m. to find the 60 x 120-foot pole barn on fire.

"It was way off the roadway, and we had to cut a gate open to get back to the property," Martin said. "It was pretty much on the ground by the time we got there, so we just tried to contain it. The grass around the barn was really dry. It's going to smolder for days."

There was no electric running to the barn Martin said, and it is believed that some farm equipment may have caught fire and spread. The incident is not considered suspicious. A bailer and a tractor were lost in the fire.

In addition to Hillsboro, fire departments from Brushcreek, Marshall and Franklin Township in Adams County responded to the fire.

Crews were on scene for approximately an hour and a half.

While Hillsboro was responding to the barn fire, Martin said that the Highland Joint North Fire and Ambulance District out of Leesburg, as well as the Marshall Fire Department, responded to a car crash on a cover run for Hillsboro.

Martin said the incident occurred in the area of state Route 124 and Fettro Road.

The Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash but did not have any information immediately available.
