Hastings encouraged local citizens to honor the research council and its members, as it celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
[[In-content Ad]]The African-American Awareness Research Council of Highland County will hold a special program at the main campus of Southern State Community College on Feb. 15. Since 1994, the AAARC has presented a Black History Month program to honor the lifetime achievements of a Highland County resident or to highlight an aspect of the area’s history.
To mark their 20th anniversary, the AAARC will look back on past programs and honor those who led the way. The annual program has honored educators and advocates, members of local families, athletes and sports teams, Black Civil War veterans and Tuskegee Airmen, ministers and churches, and judges and law enforcement officers. The program will begin at 1 p.m. in the lecture hall. Everyone is invited.
