A special dinner in observance of Adena Hospice's 25th Anniversary will take place on Tuesday, October 6 at the Christopher Conference Center in Chillicothe.
The community is invited to reserve tickets to attend the event. Keynote speaker for the event will be Kaye Lani Rafko-Wilson, RN, Miss America 1988, who was the first registered nurse crowned Miss America. Rafko-Wilson, a native of Monroe Michigan, received her RN diploma at St. Vincent Medical Center School of Nursing in Toledo, Ohio, in 1985, and also attended Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio. She has traveled to 49 states and six countries addressing nurses, hospices, and AIDS groups. In addition, she addressed a congressional subcommittee in Washington, DC, concerning nurses, including the nursing shortage, salaries, improving working conditions, and educational funding. In the Fall of 1988, with the help of several people and agencies, she started the first Hospice in her hometown of Monroe, Mich. shortly after her reign as Miss America. Currently, she is the Executive Director for Gabby's Ladder, the Family Grief Center of Monroe County. Her objective after her crowning was to utilize her visibility as a former Miss America to focus national attention on the profession of nursing, hospice programs, and critical healthcare issues including cancer and AIDS. A very motivational and charismatic speaker, Rafko-Wilson's message to nurses and allied health professionals renews their sense of pride in their professions and in their mission in caring for patients and each other. Her words reach out to those in hospice and AIDS groups because of her strong commitment in using her celebrity status to make a difference in their lives. Currently, Rafko-Wilson resides in Michigan with her husband, Charles, and their three children. Everyone in the community is invited to attend the 25th Anniversary Hospice Dinner to hear Rafko-Wilson speak and to learn more about Adena Hospice. Tickets are $30 each and reservations are required. A portion of each ticket will go toward the Adena Health Foundation's Hospice Fund.
