Adena exceeds national benchmark for heart surgery

A random audit by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) was recently completed on Adena’s Cardiothoracic Surgery program, showing it meets or exceeds the national benchmarks for cardiothoracic surgery. This places Adena’s program above 99 percent, ranking it among the Top 10 percent in the nation.
“We are extremely pleased with how well Adena’s Cardiothoracic Surgery program ranks among similar programs across the country,” said Adena’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Fortney. “Our patients can be assured that we are committed to providing quality care, while meeting the standards that have been set by a national regulating organization.”
In its report, STS made note of Adena Cardiothoracic Surgery’s exemplary record keeping and data accuracy. The hospital rankings by STS are available online at www.sts.org, and are often used by referring physicians or patients in selecting a facility or program for cardiothoracic surgery.
According to Dr. Jack Baker, co-chair of Adena’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, “The information gathered by STS is available to anyone, giving the patient and their physician a way to compare their local hospital with all of the hospitals in the nation that participate in the STS program. If you find a local hospital that is meeting or exceeding these benchmarks, like Adena is, that goes a long way in helping the patient decide this is a good place to have their heart surgery.” Along with Dr. Baker, Dr. Randall Miller also serves as co-chair of Adena’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Department.
