2013 Festival of the Bells kicks off in uptown Hillsboro

The 2013 Festival of the Bells kicked off shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday evening.

Boy Scout Troop 226, led by Senior Control Leader Michael Pinney, presented the colors. Pinney also led the crowd in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

The national anthem was performed by Christopher Ford, the son of Mark and Joyce Ford.

Festival of the Bells Committee President Michael Bradford introduced the committee members, Lindsay Bender, Bev Caroll, Chuck Emery, Nick Fauber, Mary Fent, Norman Fent, Mary Grooms, Fiona Pendell, Nyhla Rothwell, Charlie Wallingford, Debbie Wallingford, Connie Williams and Rick Williams.

Bradford also thanked the event's corporate sponsors, without whom "we could not do this at all," he said.

The invocation was given by Pastor Josh McFarland of the Hillsboro First Baptist Church.

Dylan Bender officially kicked off the Festival by ringing the bell by the Highland County Courthouse.

The 10th annual firefighter's parade was held in uptown Hillsboro Thursday evening. Pat Hays of WVNU announced the many fire departments, law enforcement agencies, elected officials, floats and other participants as they passed.

Christian music acts Ciara Colwell and TJ Magee will perform starting at 7:45 p.m., followed by a show by contemporary Christian artist Brandon Heath starting at 9 p.m.
