Hillsboro man sentenced to prison for domestic violence

A Hillsboro man was sentenced last week to two years in prison after pleading guilty to domestic violence.

Derrick Ison Sr., 41, was charged with the third-degree felony during the August 2023 Highland County grand jury session. He was accused of “knowingly causing or attempting to cause physical harm” to a victim in July.

According to court records, Ison pleaded guilty to the charge during a pretrial hearing Sept. 28.

As noted in the indictment, Ison has previous convictions of domestic violence, including one in Hillsboro Municipal Court in 2009 and one in Highland County Common Pleas Court in 2019, although Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss said there were multiple domestic violence charges in Ison’s records.

“You have a lot of issues, Mr. Ison, but the one that’s most dangerous to people and the public is the fact that you commit domestic violence,” Coss told Ison. “Seven convictions of domestic violence, which in my 15 years on the bench, this may be a record of what I’ve seen.”

Although the joint recommendation in the plea agreement was an 18-month sentence, Coss proceeded to sentence Ison to 24 months in prison. Ison had 74 days of jail time credit.

“The sentence recordation of 18 is not appropriate, given your record,” the judge said. “I think you’re a danger to women.”
