  • 'Fiscal cliff' averted on contentious GOP vote
    In a contentious House vote, the Republican majority backed down from earlier demands for more spending cuts and agreed to tax increases late on New Year's Day last night, and agreed to the Senate compromise bill that would avert the so-called fiscal cliff. Ohio GOP Sen. Rob Portman voted for the bill, while Congressman Mike Turner voted no.
  • Senators release Benghazi report
    The report found that, "prior to the terrorist attacks in Libya on September 11, 2012, it was widely understood that the Libyan government was incapable of performing its duty to protect U.S. diplomatic facilities and personnel, as required by longstanding international agreements, but the Department of State failed to take adequate steps to fill the resulting security gap.
  • Ohio Homeland Security, Ohio Department of Education partner to support schools
    In response to requests for information relative to planning school safety initiatives, Ohio Homeland Security has partnered with the Ohio Department of Education to assemble informational resources from a variety of reliable sources and is providing them to Ohio’s school administrators and the law enforcement community.
  • Former Mill's Pride facility sold, with hopes of new jobs
    The former Mill's Pride cabinet factory in Waverly has been purchased by a group of investors who may bring more jobs to the region.
  • Hillsboro man charged with assault
    A Hillsboro man has been charged with assault, criminal trespassing and obstruction of official business, after a weekend incident in the 500 block of North East Street. Adam J. Denner, 29, was arrested after leaving a trail of footprints in the snow. Officers followed Denner's tracks to the Belfast Pike area and found the suspect hiding in a basement.

    The Highland County Board of Commissioners will hold their 2013 organizational meeting at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at the commissioners' office in the Highland County Administration Building.
  • District 9 crews complete operations, return to county facilities
    Following the latest round of winter weather, crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation - District 9 have completed snow and ice operations and returned to their respective garages.
  • Traffic signal change begins Dec. 31
    Beginning Monday, Dec. 31, the city of Hillsboro Street Department will set the traffic light at U.S. 62 south and South Street on flashing only.

    As 2012 comes to its conclusion – and the world hasn't ended – The Highland County Press is taking a look back at some of the year's bigger stories. The year started off with a major Main Street fire in the city of Hillsboro that destroyed the former Highland Enterprise Lumber Company property. Much of the other news of 2012 also centered around fire-related issues, as area townships began looking elsewhere for their fire and EMS coverage.

    With another winter storm moving into Ohio tonight, crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9 are gearing up for the next wave of snow and planning for overnight operations.
  • Here we go again
    A weather system currently moving through the Mississippi Valley will track into the Ohio Valley this evening and into the upper Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Saturday. Widespread snowfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected, with locally heavier amounts possible, the National Weather Service said Friday. In Highland County, new snowfall accumulations could range from 2 to 4 inches.
  • Greenfield man arrested during traffic stop
    On Dec. 27 at 11:16 a.m., a Greenfield Police K-9 unit on patrol spotted a wanted subject as a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Jefferson St. near Tenth St.
