Investigators seek tips from 6 camper fires at Preble County campground in last 5 months

Ohio Fire Marshal's Office, Press Release

Investigators with the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal (SFM) are seeking tips from the public as they investigate six separate fires, including four confirmed arsons, that took place at a Preble County campground.

On Jan. 18, 2025, the Camden Fire Department (CFD) requested SFM’s Fire and Explosion Investigations Bureau to investigate a fire that occurred in the Deer Run Luxury Campground, located at 9513 Free Short Pike in Camden.

This incident marked the sixth such fire in the campground since September 2024. The fire was discovered in the same general area of the campground as a separate fire on Dec. 22.

Prior to these two fires, investigators determined four other fires in the campground this past September involving camper vehicles had been intentionally set.

On Sept. 13, 2024, the CFD and the Preble County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the campground for a camper fire. When firefighters arrived, they found a camper located at 107 Buck-Rub Cove on fire. While on the scene, the fire department also found a nearby camper with materials under it that had been set on fire. That camper sustained damage as a result of the burning materials.

Later that same day at approximately 9:30 p.m., the CFD responded to the campground again on a report of two additional camper fires. When firefighters responded, they found campers on fire located at 153 and 154 Antler Cove.

At this time, investigators have received little information from the public regarding these cases and are asking for anyone with information to come forward with tips.

A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by the Blue Ribbon Arson Committee for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for these fires.

“We’re asking anyone who may have information on any of these fires to please come forward and provide us that information,” said Fire and Explosion Investigations Bureau Chief Josh Hobbs. “Even the smallest detail or bit of information can help us determine who is responsible for setting these fires.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the State Fire Marshal’s tip line at 800-589-2728. Callers can remain anonymous, and all tips will be thoroughly investigated.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing to investigate these fires and is working with the Preble County Sheriff’s Office, Preble County Prosecutor’s Office and the Preble County Zoning Department.
