Hillsboro man sentenced to prison on strangulation charge

A Hillsboro man was sentenced recently to over a year in prison after pleading guilty to a strangulation charge.
 
As previously reported, Alan W. Wybenga, 62, was indicted in December by a Highland County grand jury and charged with strangulation, a fourth-degree felony; and domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor. 

The indictment alleged that on or about Nov. 28, Wybenga “did knowingly cause or create a substantial risk of physical harm” to a victim “by means of strangulation or suffocation.” 

According to court records, Wybenga pleaded guilty to the strangulation charge Feb. 9, with the domestic violence count dismissed. 

Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss sentenced Wybenga to a definite determinate term of 17 months in prison, one month less than the maximum for the charge, according to court records. Wybenga had 73 days of jail time credit.
