Ghost Walk brings history to life in Greenfield Oct. 12

On Monday, Oct. 12, the spirits will be active in the Old Burying Ground behind Travellers Rest in Greenfield. The "ghosts" will be telling their stories on that night. That's the date of Greenfield Historical Society's annual Ghost Walk. Five ghosts will be telling their tales to visitors being escorted through the burying grounds. One ghost will be Christopher Shrock, a German carpenter who settled in Greenfield. He will be telling visitors about his descendents and what effect they had on the growth of Greenfield. He will be portrayed by Eric Salyers. A second ghost will be Elizabeth Leonard. Elizabeth's husband, Edward, was a tailor in Greenfield. Mary Wisecup will bring Mrs. Leonard to life for visitors. The Wilson family was a family of doctors. Bob Judkins will portray Robert Wilson and tell about himself and the members of his family. Danny Long will portraying Henry Irwin. One of Irwin's descendents was Admiral Noble Irwin. The last ghost to come to life will be DeWitt Clinton Long. Long is not buried in the Old Burying Ground but was a stonecutter and will be present to tell about his profession and the meanings of some of the symbols on old tombstones. His story will be told by Jerry Parker. This year the society is offering a quick and inexpensive hot dog supper before the ghosts walk. The supper will be served from 4:30 to 6 p.m., at the Grain & Hay Building. People on a tight schedule can come by for supper then walk across the street to visit the ghosts.
