In a contentious House vote, the Republican majority backed down from earlier demands for more spending cuts and agreed to tax increases late on New Year's Day last night, and agreed to the Senate compromise bill that would avert the so-called fiscal cliff. Ohio GOP Sen. Rob Portman voted for the bill, while Congressman Mike Turner voted no.

A Hillsboro man has been charged with assault, criminal trespassing and obstruction of official business, after a weekend incident in the 500 block of North East Street. Adam J. Denner, 29, was arrested after leaving a trail of footprints in the snow. Officers followed Denner's tracks to the Belfast Pike area and found the suspect hiding in a basement.

With another winter storm moving into Ohio tonight, crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9 are gearing up for the next wave of snow and planning for overnight operations.

A weather system currently moving through the Mississippi Valley will track into the Ohio Valley this evening and into the upper Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Saturday. Widespread snowfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected, with locally heavier amounts possible, the National Weather Service said Friday. In Highland County, new snowfall accumulations could range from 2 to 4 inches.
