SOCCER REPORT: McClain Tigers, Fairfield Lady Lions gain victories on Wednesday

BOYS SOCCER: McClain 10, Fairfield 0
LEESBURG — The McClain Tigers boys soccer team improved to 2-0 overall this season by defeating the host Fairfield Lions, 10-0 in non-conference play. The Tigers (2-0) led by a 3-0 at halftime, then followed up with seven goals in the second half.
McClain’s goals included two two-goal nights, with Raymond Daugherty finishing with two goals plus an assist. Haydon Hice of McClain also had two goals on the evening.
Braeden Bergstrom finished with one goal and three assists, and scoring one goal each were Jase Allen, Luke Sanchez, Francesco, Bryson Badgley and Andrew Newland. Tallying two assists was Lyle White.
“This was a good win tonight for the boys. We face new challenges next week,” MHS head coach Nick McNeal said.
Next for MHS are two home matches, with the first one being Tuesday, Sept. 1 vs. Alexander, followed by a match Thursday, Sept. 3 vs. Jackson in the Frontier Athletic Conference opener.
Fairfield head coach Jacob Alexander also commented on the match as his team played with just 11 players for the entire match, as they are a young rebuilding team.
“The boys played hard, but when you have no subs, it wears you down, and the second half showed that,” Alexander said. “We are a better team than the score represents. Hunter Burns did very well in goal tonight. With no subs, we had to get creative to give guys breaks, and the guys adapted well. We will regroup and move on from this.”
Fairfield is scheduled to play again Saturday, Aug. 29 on the road at Miami Trace at 1 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER: Fairfield 4, McClain 3
LEESBURG — In a competitive match to open their 2020 season, the Fairfield Lady Lions earned a non-conference win over the visiting McClain Lady Tigers by a 4-3 score at Fairfield High School.
The Lady Lions scored the first two goals of the non-conference match as Cadence Saunders netted both of those goals for the 2-0 advantage. McClain scored their first goal of the match with a goal from McKenzie Anderson with 7:21 left in the first half.
The score stood at 2-1 once halftime arrived but quickly went to 2-2 as Kerigan Pollard scored a goal for McClain, with the senior putting the ball into the back of the net with 39:08 left in the match.
Fairfield regained the lead with a goal from Saunders with 14:16 left in regulation for the hat trick, putting FHS ahead by a 3-2 score. Again, it was Pollard tying the score, this time at 3-3 with 13:41 on the clock, as she maneuvered past the keeper and a defensive player for the goal.
The Lady Lions put the game away for good as they scored the game-winning goal off a shot by Kennedy Zink with 6:20 left in the match for the 4-3 win.
“It was our first game, and with the heat index being 100, our bodies were wore out. We had a couple injuries, but the offseason work the girls put in showed today,” Fairfield coach Jacob Alexander said. “We got tired at the end, but we gutted it out, and that last goal was pure determination.
“Our defensive focus was on Pollard, and we man-marked her. We knew what we were up against with her, and we saw it last year. We see the headlines and she is a great player, not a really good player, but she’s a great player. When you have a player like her, it is an advantage to a team, and we were trying to take away that advantage. We switched up multiple girls on her — Hallie Haines, Hailey Tolle and Saunders all took turns defending her, and they all did an excellent job.”
Alexander also spoke about the play of keeper Alayna McIntosh.
“She was excellent tonight and has a lot more confidence this year. It’s shown at times tonight and being ready, and I couldn’t have asked for a better performance,” Alexander said. “Also offense to defense Saunders really starred with three goals and her defense against Kerigan Pollard stood out. It was an all-around great game.
“The leadership by Ella Newkirk at the top, even though she didn’t get a goal, her fingerprints were all over this game with pressure. For a freshman, Kennedy Zink did excellent at top as well, and also we had one player play the entire game without a sub, and that was freshman Avery Teeters.”
McClain keeper Macey McCune finished with 31 saves in the loss.
“Macey did a really good job today. She was a lot more aggressive, and she took control, which is what we worked on this summer,” MHS head coach Tyler Carman said. “We wanted her to be more vocal, and give credit to Fairfield, they were a lot faster than us and they put the pressure on us.
“They (FHS) were the more conditioned team today, and playing against Kerigan — she’s going to have two to three players on her every game — so we have to find some other options. She still had two goals. Take nothing away from Fairfield … they looked sharp, they had good touches, and ultimately they were the better team and they deserved to win.”
Fairfield is scheduled to play again Saturday, Aug. 29 on the road at Miami Trace at 11 a.m. McClain will next play on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. in FAC action.

For the third consecutive game, the Lynchburg-Clay boys soccer team not only earned a win, but they did so by the same score in all three games, winning on Wednesday by a 2-1 score over the North Adams Green Devils at NAHS.
Lynchburg-Clay’s goals were scored by Harrison Burge and Landon West.
The win moves the Mustangs to 2-0 in the SHAC and 3-0 overall this season. Next for the Mustangs is an away match on Monday, Aug. 31 at Fayetteville with a start of 4:30 p.m.

For the second time this week, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs gained a SHAC win, as they defeated the host North Adams Lady Green Devils by a 2-0 score on Wednesday evening at NAHS.
Lynchburg-Clay had one goal each both Raelynn Ruble and McKenzie Morgan, who also had one assist in the win. At goal for LCHS was Philemina Toca with six saves in the shutout win.
LCHS is scheduled to play in a non-conference road match Saturday, Aug. 29 against host Williamsburg at 11:45 a.m.
