Newkirk scores 6 goals for Lady Lions in win over McClain

The Fairfield Lady Lions soccer team traveled to Greenfield Thursday night and showed why they are considered one of the best teams in the area after a convincing 7-1 victory over McClain.
Senior Ella Newkirk led the high-powered Fairfield offense with an amazing six goals scored, four coming in the second half.
“We were down a couple of players tonight, so we played some people in different positions, and it seemed to work OK for us,” said Fairfield head coach Jacob Alexander. “Ella (Newkirk) really stood out in the game with all the hard work she did up top scoring the six goals.
“Our midfield is where we really try to take control of the game both defensively and offensively, and our back line was also pretty good today.”
The McClain girls played a solid first half, except for a two-minute spurt when Fairfield scored all three of their first-half goals.
Newkirk scored her first goal at the 24:54 mark of the first period and added another less than a minute later, giving the Lady Lions the early 2-0 advantage. Senior Cadence Saunders gave Fairfield a 3-0 halftime advantage with a goal at the 23:43 mark.
Take away that two-minute run by the Lady Lions and the Greenfield girls played them pretty much even most of the first half.
“There was a couple of minutes there in the first half that got away from us, but overall I didn’t think we played that bad,” McClain head coach Tyler Carman said. “Fairfield is a really good team who returns a lot of experience, and last year they made a pretty good run in the tournament.”
Newkirk scored all four of Fairfield’s goals in the second half, while McClain’s lone goal came from Luca Matesic, who at the time cut the Lady Tigers deficit to 4-1 with 26:58 left in regulation.
“We’ll take some of the positives from this game to practice Monday, and hopefully it will help us get ready for a tournament game at Athens on Tuesday,” said Carman.
