Lions gain SHL win over Green Devils

LEESBURG — On a night where Fairfield High School raised over $4,000 for their annual Coaches vs. Cancer game, the Lions didn't let their home crowd down in their return to the court.
Fairfield used a 23-point first frame to send them to a 59-50 Southern Hills League win over the North Adams Green Devils, Friday.
The Lions (4-1, 6-4) opened the game with a 23-14 lead, followed by winning the second quarter at 11-10, taking a halftime lead of 34-24.
"We had a big first quarter, and it is exactly what we want to do," FHS head coach Matt Carson said. "We had six guys score in the first, we hit 3-pointers and overall it was just a great quarter.
"We played sluggish in the second, but our defense was there."
FHS added 11 points to their lead in the third frame, outscoring the Green Devils (3-3, 6-4) at 11-9. In the final frame, NA led the quarter 17-14.
Fairfield was led in scoring by Quentin Williams with a game-high 21 points, scoring 16 points in the final two quarters. Williams made two 3-pointers and went 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.
For the game, the Lions were 14-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Following Williams was Brad Clay with 15 points. Clay scored 13 points in the first half.
Austin May added eight points to the Lions' score, along with Austin Hildebrant scoring four points.
Also scoring for the Lions were: Blake Hildebrant (3), Moritz Hayler (1), Elijah Carmean (3), Wes Willey (2) and Cole Putnam (2).
"Our bench play was great, and it was an all-around great team effort," Carson said.

For the Green Devils, they were led in scoring by Andrew Mitchell with 16 points. Seth Sparks added 10 points for NA. The Green Devils finished 5-of-7 from the free-throw line, while adding three 3-pointers. FHS tallied five 3-pointers from Williams (2), May (2) and Carmean (1).
The Lions play again on Saturday, Jan. 7 when they travel to Manchester for a SHL game.
"Being at the halfway point of the season … at this point I can say we haven't had a bad loss. All of our losses came against quality teams. We are progressing faster than I thought we would, but I like how our defense and free-throw shooting has progressed rapidly.
"Everybody is getting better, and we are focusing on what each individual player is good at and helping to make them great at it."
