Lions fall to Astros to begin season

LEESBURG — The Lions opened up strong, went down, and were never able to retain their early lead as they dropped their 2011-12 season opener to the East Clinton Astros 76-66 Friday night at Grandle Gymnasium in Leesburg.
EC, of the Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference, led 23-15 after the first quarter and took a halftime lead of 35-32.
In the third, EC outscored the Lions 15-10, and in the final eight minutes EC outscored FHS 26-24.
"We led 7-2 early on, but once we lost the lead, we had to play catch-up the rest of the night," Fairfield head coach Matt Carson said. "We missed shots, had too many turnovers, and it was an eight-to-nine point game after that.
"The guys fought hard, and they key to the game was East Clinton got us into a track meet, and that is not the type of game we are suited to play for 32 minutes."
FHS junior Quentin Williams led all scorers with 23 points. He made five two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and was 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.
Senior Austin Hildebrant followed with 12 points, and sophomore Blake Hildebrant followed with 10 points.
Also scoring for the Lions were: Austin May (3), Elijah Carmean (7), Brad Clay (4) Wes Willey (2) and Cole Putnam (5).
FHS totaled 17 field goals, five three pointers (Blake Hildebrant and Carmean each made one) and finished 17-of-25 from the free-throw line.
For the Astros, Dewey Runk led with 21 points (two 3-pointers). He was followed by Tyler Lewis with 16 points, including a 3-pointer. Daulton Floyd and Matt Ison each scored 11 points for the Astros. Floyd made one 3-pointer and Ison was 5-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Fairfield, who is having their 2nd Annual Hall of Fame Inductions on Saturday, will be hosting Southeastern (Ross) with freshman play starting at 4:30 p.m.
"We have to forget about (Friday)," Carson said. "Everyone, including the coaching staff has something to improve on, and we just have to get ready quickly for Saturday.
"Our execution has to be better, but we had great effort (Friday)."
