Lions fall by 2 at Peebles

A 22-point fourth quarter still wasn't enough for the Fairfield Lions, Friday night. Even though they had the big-time scoring effort in the final eight minutes, they still came up two points short, falling in their Southern Hills Athletic Conference matchup with the Peebles Indians, 68-66.
The loss moves the Lions one game back in Division II of the SHAC, as they are now 4-3 on the year in conference play with six conference games left on the schedule. Leading Division II is Whiteoak at 5-2.
Overall, the Lions are 6-7. Peebles now stands at 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the SHAC.
In their loss at Peebles on Jan. 18, the Lions led 12-8 following the conclusion of the first quarter but were outscored 25-14 in the second frame, leading to a deficit of 33-26 at halftime.
The Lions outscored the Indians 18-17 in the third but never could make up the seven-point halftime deficit as they eventually outscored the host Indians, 22-18 in the fourth quarter.
For the game, Peebles shot 50 percent from the field.
"This was a game of runs," Fairfield head coach Everett Snyder said. "We controlled the first quarter, and midway through the second, Peebles took the lead.
"We hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left in the game, but we were out of timeouts, and the game was over before we could foul them."
The win moves Peebles to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the SHAC, as they are in Division I of the conference.
For the Lions, Quentin Williams led with 23 points, as the senior was 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Williams also made two 3-pointers and added nine rebounds and four assists.

Gage Montgomery added 15 points with seven two-point baskets and one free-throw conversion. He added six rebounds and three assists.
Ryan Bates scored 12 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Also scoring for FHS were Elijah Carmean and Joey Wilson each with six points. Carmean scored his points with two 3-pointers. Blake Hildebrant rounded out the scoring with four points.
"We had several players play well," Snyder said. "Blake (Hildebrant) ran the point well for us, and he's been doing a good job for us on defense and does a lot for us."
Leading the Indians in scoring was Beau Justice with 25 points, including three 3-pointers and a 4-of-4 night from the free-throw line. Trent Arey followed with 23 points and one 3-pointer. Arey was a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe in the win and collected a double-double by adding 12 rebounds, eight assists and one steal.
"We tried two or three different players on Justice, but he's able to shoot over players and with pressure," Snyder said. "Arey and McAdow also had good games for Peebles."
PHS didn't miss a single free throw as they finished 14-of-14.
Matthew McAdow followed with 16 points for PHS, as he made two 3-pointers, and rounding out the scoring for the host squad was Mason Johnson with two points.
The Indians also totaled 33 rebounds as a team, along with 13 assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Both blocked shots were from Tyler Gray. Also for PHS, Tyler Ryan totaled six rebounds in the win over FHS.
Turnovers were scarce in the game as FHS finished with nine turnovers and the Indians totaled eight turnovers.
Fairfield plays again on Tuesday as they will host Manchester, and on Friday, the Lions will travel to play at Whiteoak, both SHAC games.
