Lady Lions move to 2-0 in SHAC

Fairfield returned to Southern Hills Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon, defeating the West Union Lady Dragons, 7-3 at FHS.
The Lady Lions continued to improve their play defensively, playing errorless softball, while turning two double plays.
Arica Melson took to the circle for the Lady Lions (2-0, 3-2) for the third consecutive day, picking up her third win in as many days. Melson pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits and six walks, including four strikeouts.
Mikayla Coleman came in relief with one out in the fifth inning to shutout the Lady Dragons the rest of the way to notch her first save of the season. Coleman went 2.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk.
WU took the early one-run lead with a run in the top of the first inning.
The Lady Lions quickly tied the score when Grace Larrick singled to the left side of the infield (with one out) in the bottom of the first inning. She stole second base, and Shelby Smithson laced a single to left field to drive in Larrick.
FHS, the home team, scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. Heather Sanderson (2-for-3, one run) led off the inning with a single to centerfield. Justice Hattan followed with a line drive single to left field, and Cynnamon Sova-Davy blasted a home run over the centerfield fence.

WU pulled within one run, by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning, for a 4-3 score.
FHS answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, as Smithson (2-for-4, home run, one run, two RBIs) hit a towering home run over the scoreboard in left field to give her team a two-run advantage.
Coleman would set down the Lady Dragons in order in the top of the sixth inning, while the Lady Lions added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Sova-Davy (2-for-3, home run, one run, three RBIs) led off the inning with a line drive single to left field, followed by Sirenity Smith hitting a single to left field, advancing Sova-Davy to second base.
Shaylee Carson came off the bench as a pinch runner for Smith. Courtney Huff attempted to move the runners over with a bunt, but Sova-Davy was forced out at third base. Kaitlin Evans was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and with Larrick at the plate, a pitch got behind the Lady Dragon catcher and Carson slid home with a run. When the throw to the pitcher covering the plate was wide, Huff raced home as well.
Coleman nailed down the victory in the top of the seventh with the help of a double play by the Lady Lions' defense.
Mary Hinton (0-2) suffered the loss for West Union.
The Fairfield Lady Lions will travel to Washington Court House on Saturday to play the Lady Blue Lions in a doubleheader. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
