Lady Lions held to 2 hits in loss at Peebles

The return to Southern Hills Athletic Conference play Tuesday didn't go as planned for the Fairfield Lady Lions as they were held to two hits in a 4-2 loss to the Peebles Lady Indians.
PHS jumped out early with a 4-0 lead, and though they threatened at times, including in the seventh inning, Fairfield only cut the early deficit in half, as FHS scored two runs in the sixth inning and put the tying runs on in the seventh.
Fairfield, who move to 4-4 overall (2-1 in the SHAC), failed to get a timely hit in the seventh inning with runners on the bases.
After giving up runs early, Lady Lion sophomore pitcher Arica Melson retired the last 11 batters she faced.
The key to the game was the Lady Lions' inability to put the ball in play as hard-throwing Lady Indians ace pitcher Hayleigh Swayne limited the Lady Lions to just two hits while striking out 13.

Peebles (2-0, 3-0) took an early two-run lead by scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Swayne led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second base. Hannah Greene followed with a walk. Swayne and Greene advanced bases on a wild pitch, then Swayne stole home and Greene moved over to third. Megan Knauff had an infield single to knock in Greene.
The Lady Indians extended their lead to 4-0 with single runs in the second and third innings.
In the top of the sixth inning with bases empty, Kaitlin Evans drew a two-out walk and stole second. She advanced to third base when the throw went into centerfield.
Grace Larrick followed with a walk and also stole second. Shelby Smithson gained the first Lady Lion hit of the game, singling to right field for two RBIs.
FHS had another chance to score runs in the seventh rally again, beginning with a two-out walk by Sirenity Smith, with Melson following with an infield single.
When the throw at first was wide, Smith advanced to third base. Courtney Rhoades came off the bench as a courtesy runner for Melson and stole second. With the tying runs on third base and second base, the Lady Lions' rally fell short as the game ended on a close play at first base.
Melson (4-2) suffered the loss for Fairfield. In six innings, she allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks, while striking out nine.
Swayne (3-0) was the winning pitcher for Peebles. She pitched seven innings innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks. She finished with 13 strikeouts.
FHS will host Whiteoak in another SHAC game on Thursday at 5 p.m.
