Fairfield sweeps Lynchburg-Clay in 3 sets at Grandle Gymnasium

LEESBURG – Though it was a start to the Southern Hills Athletic Conference match that saw the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs lead early on, the host Fairfield Lady Lions regrouped and took control of the SHAC contest. FHS won in three straight sets en route to the conference victory over their Highland County foe.
Fairfield won the volleyball match by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-14.
LCHS led early in the first set by a 3-0 score and eventually at 6-1. The Lady Lions came back with a vengeance at Grandle Gymnasium with points scored by Paris Priest, Peyton Magee, Caitlin Campbell and Haley Shoemaker to get within two points of LCHS at 7-5. In those points scored, Campbell had an ace for FHS.
Eventually, the score was tied at 8-8 with the help of two points off serves from Katie Buddelmeyer, but LCHS came back to take a 10-8 lead. FHS tied the score at 10-10 with a play at the net from Braylynn Haines, as they trailed LCHS by a 12-10 score with one of the points coming off a block at the net from Emma Fouch.
With plays out of play helping the visiting Lady Mustangs, LC took a 13-11 lead, but once again, Fairfield tied the score at 13 with a kill from Haines.
From there, FHS took a 14-12 lead with an ace by Faith Miller, and then points by Fouch and Miller left the Lady Lions in the lead at 16-13 following an ace by Miller. Haines, Priest, Fouch and Miller put the first set out of reach for a 25-13 win. The final two points of the set came off serves by Miller.
In set two, the Lady Mustangs built a 2-0 lead very early on, but once FHS tied the score at 2-2, they didn’t trail for the rest of the set. Fairfield had Miller score a point at the net, and that was followed by the duo of Priest and Haines taking control at the net for a 7-2 Fairfield lead.
FHS eventually built a lead of 20-7 with the 19th point scored by Shoemaker on a spike. LC battled with one of their points from Sophie Richardson late in the set, but FHS ended the second set with serves from Buddelmeyer for the 25-12 win.
In set three, the score was tied five times, lastly at 7-7, before FHS took the lead for good with a 25-14 win.
Next for Lynchburg-Clay is a home game against Paint Valley Sept. 29. The Lady Lions are scheduled to play Peebles in a home game Sept. 30.
