Fairfield run-rules visiting East Clinton to start 2022 softball season

LEESBURG — The weather might have been in the low 30s on Monday in Leesburg, but the bats of the Fairfield Lady Lions were on fire as the ’22 softball season debut for the team from Leesburg was full of offense and hits, defeating the visiting East Clinton Lady Astros 16-0 in five innings.
Fairfield used 14 hits in the non-conference victory with runs scored in all four innings they were at the plate. Fairfield started off with two runs in both the first and second innings for a 4-0 lead, followed by a four-run third inning to take an eight-run advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Lions added eight more runs to their side of the scoreboard for the 16-run win.
“We were just happy to be out here, very happy,” Fairfield head coach Mark Dettwiller said. “I was pleased with our hitting, with 14 hits. Give East Clinton some credit, their freshman pitcher kept battling, and she had no quit.
“I’m just happy with the girls and how they came out ready to play. To play errorless ball the first game of the year in cold weather isn’t easy.”
Eight players for Fairfield had at least on hit in the season-opening win with Caitlyn Quickle leading the way with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with three runs and three RBI. Quickle had a single, double and hit a home run, and she collected a steal.
“At the plate Caitlyn was crushing the ball going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, and a single. She hit the ball very well,” Dettwiller said.
Jobey Hattan finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Emmi Vance also had two hits, finishing the game at 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, with one of her hits being a double. Hannah Hamilton went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Sydney Hooper was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Having one hit each for Fairfield were Halle Hamilton (a triple, one run, two RBI), Sydney Sanders (one run, two RBI) and Faith Miller (one run, three RBI). Katelyn Chambers totaled two runs.
Quickle was also the winning pitcher, throwing five complete innings where she allowed no runs on three hits and one walk. She finished with nine strikeouts as she faced 19 batters.
“Caitlyn she did an outstanding job hitting her spots today. He rise ball was working good today and she threw the ball really well and I was pleased,” Dettwiller said. “She did a good job keeping the ball low, and they hit a lot of ground balls.”
East Clinton’s hits were from Cheyenne Reed with two hits and Lydia Kessler with one hit. ECHS also had six errors against Fairfield while the Lady Lions had no errors. Neither team forced a walk in the game.
Next for Fairfield is a road game on Tuesday, March 29 against North Adams in Southern Hills Athletic Conference action at 5 p.m. From there, the Lady Lions will play another SHAC game on Thursday, March 31 at Peebles. On Friday, Fairfield is scheduled to play another conference road game, as they are scheduled to play at Lynchburg-Clay on April 1 at 5 p.m.
