Fairfield Lady Lions lose three-set match to Northwest

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lady Lions volleyball team returned to the court Tuesday night following a break in their schedule as the Highland County Fair took place last week. In two of the three sets against the visiting Northwest Lady Mohawks, the Lady Lions battled strong, but ultimately it was the visiting team sweeping Fairfield for the non-conference win.
In their contest at Grandle Gymnasium, the Lady Lions lost to Northwest by scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 30-28. The loss drops Fairfield to 5-3 overall, while Northwest is now 9-1 on the season.
Fairfield didn’t make the showdown between the two Southeast District teams easy for Northwest, with the first set seeing the Lady Lions trail at one point by a 14-9 score, but eventually tie the score at 16-16. Later, the score was tied at 18 after the Lady Lions had gained the lead in the first set. As the set continued, there were tied scores of 19 and 20. Before the tied score of 20-20, Fairfield took the lead with a block by Paris Priest.
After the score was tied at 20, Northwest never again trailed in the first set, scoring the final five points of set one for the win.
In the second set, Fairfield got off to the early lead by a 2-1 score, but after that the score was tied a few times from 2-2 all the way to 12-12. Northwest eventually took over the pace of the second set, and won by 11 points at 25-14.
Before the big set two win by Northwest, Fairfield had a block from Braylynn Haines. Northwest in that same time frame of the second set had aces from both Ava Jenkins and Haidyn Wamsley. Northwest scored the final 10 points consecutively with help from an ace by Reagan Lewis and a big hit by Valerie Copas.
Wamsley finished with 20 kills, four blocks, five digs and three aces for Northwest. Lewis totaled 37 assists, six aces, two kills, five digs and one block.
Set three didn’t look like it was going to go well for the Lady Lions, as they trailed at one point by a 12-4 score. Then the Lady Lions began to battle back with an ace by Layla Hattan, plus another point off a serve by Hattan. Next came a kill from Priest to bring FHS back to within four points of tying the Northwest score.
Priest had another point scored at the net later in set three for a 13-10 deficit, and later the Lady Lions continued to fight back, tying the score at 18, erasing what once was a deficit of eight points.
Fairfield took the lead with a serve by Caitlyn Quickle for a 19-18 advantage. As the set continued, the Lady Lions climbed closer to the potential set win, getting to within one final point of gaining the set three victory following a point from Emma Fouch.
This time, Northwest battled back with three straight points, tying the score at 24. Fairfield took back the lead after NWHS hit their side of the net on a serve. Wamsley of Northwest came back and put the Lady Mohawks in front with her play at the front of the net for a 26-25 lead.
Fairfield tied the score at 26 when Northwest was unable to get the ball back over the net, and then the Lady Lions regained the lead with a point from Quickle.
Again, the Lady Mohawks came back to tie the score at 27, then regained the lead with the help of a kill from Wamsley for the tie and an ace by Lewis for a 28-27 score.
The score was tied one last time after NWHS hit their own side of the net. In the end, it was the visitors who won the third set — and match — with two more points after FHS hit their own net. A final point scored by Audrey Knittel at the net sealed the win for NWHS. For the match, Knittel totaled 13 kills and one ace.
