Fairfield gains big win over North Adams

LEESBURG – Knowing it was a game his team needed to win to stay in the race for the Southern Hills Athletic Conference lead, Fairfield head coach Jeremy McGraw relayed that message to his team before their game on Thursday night against North Adams.
As the two teams battled in the SHAC game at Grandle Gymnasium, it was Fairfield answering the challenge and taking over second place in the Division I SHAC standings with a 62-54 victory over NAHS.
The win moves Fairfield to 7-1 in the SHAC and 12-1 overall, and the loss sends North Adams to 6-3 in the SHAC and 11-3 overall.
For the Lady Lions, they led 13-6 after the first quarter as the score was tied early on at 6-6, and FHS broke away on a 7-0 run to end the quarter with points from Faith Donley, Madison Bronner and Emma Fouch. The first six points scored by Fairfield came from Braylynn Haines, Bronner and Caitlyn Quickle.
Fouch led Fairfield in scoring for the game with 25 points, followed by Bronner with 14 points and Haines with 11 points, giving the Lady Lions three players in double figures. Donley totaled seven points in the win, while the rest of the final scoring included Peyton Magee with three points and Quickle with two points.
Though North Adams outscored the Lady Lions 13-11 in the second quarter, Fairfield led 24-19 at halftime.
Fairfield opened the quarter with two points from Fouch, followed with a layup on a fast break by Donley with 5:49 on the second-quarter clock. Following two points by the Lady Green Devils, Donley added two points for a 19-8 FHS advantage.
North Adams’ Kenlie Jones answered with a three-point play, and after Fouch came back with two points in transition, the Lady Green Devils built a 8-0 run, getting within two points of tying the score, with FHS leading 21-19.
The Lady Lions took a five-point advantage at halftime, as Fouch sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 24-19 advantage.
FHS led 41-34 after three quarters, as they outscored North Adams, 17-15.
Early in the third, North Adams scored the first six points of the quarter, taking a 25-24 lead over the Lady Lions with 5:34 left on the clock. Following a full time out by Fairfield, Bronner and Haines each scored a basket, as Bronner’s two points came on an underhand shot, putting Fairfield back in the lead at 28-25.
North Adams tied the game at 28 with 4:13 left in the third after a 3-pointer from Jones, but that was all erased by the Lady Lions with a 10-0 run consisting of an off-balanced shot by Fouch, a 3-pointer also from Fouch, a 3-pointer by Haines and two points in the paint by Bronner for a 38-28 advantage with 1:46 left in the quarter.
North Adams scored six more points in the frame, while FHS added a 3-pointer by Fouch with 20 second on the clock for a seven-point lead at 41-34 with three quarters in the books.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Lions never lost the lead, as their scoring had eight points from Fouch in the quarter (including her fourth 3-pointer of the game), three points by Peyton Magee, two points by Donley and four points each by Bronner and Haines.
FHS won the final quarter at 21-20.
North Adams was led in scoring by Jones with 16 points and Keetyn Hupp with 12 points.
As a team, FHS was 9-of-18 from the free-throw line, while North Adams finished 15-of-16 in their free-throw attempts.
Next for Fairfield is another SHAC game Monday, Jan. 17 at Peebles.
