Fairfield earns SHAC win over Lynchburg-Clay

DODSONVILLE — In a highly competitive Southern Hills Athletic Conference contest Thursday night, the Fairfield Lady Lions did everything they needed to fend off the host Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, with FHS winning by a 49-44 score.
Following a 10-10 first frame which saw Fairfield’s Peyton Magee score six of the Lady Lions’ points, while LCHS had Bry Price also scored six of her team’s points, the second frame led to the Lady Lions outscoring the Lady Mustangs, 11-9 for a halftime lead of 21-19.
“This game was top-level competition in the SHAC,” Fairfield head coach Josh Stackhouse said. “You have Lynchburg-Clay who was voted number one and we were voted number four, and you saw both teams wanted it. It was neck-and-neck, and we kind of pulled ahead toward the end, but both teams had great effort and both teams wanted it. That is about as good as it gets in the SHAC.”
That second frame began with Fairfield having points by Magee, Hailey Tolle and Hannah Hamilton (with Hamilton sinking a 3-pointer) to build a 17-13 lead with 4:14 left in the second quarter.
Magee led FHS with 16 points (four rebounds, six assists, three steals), while Tolle totaled 10 points (three rebounds, one block) in the game. Hamilton ended the game for FHS with five points (eight rebounds, one steal).
Two free throws from Addison West brought LCHS a little closer to tying the score, as LCHS cut Fairfield’s lead to three points with 3:33 left on the clock. FHS answered with a basket by Kassi Miller — who totaled four points, three rebounds and one steal — but the Lady Mustangs again cut the lead of FHS to three points with a basket in the paint from West for a 19-16 score.
The two team exchanged baskets once again to end the frame with Magee scoring a two-point basket, while West knocked down a 3-pointer, leaving FHS ahead by just two points when the second quarter came to a close.
Fairfield (4-1, 4-1) added to their lead to start the third frame with a bucket by Jobey Hattan, only to see West of Lynchburg-Clay score four straight points, tying the score at 23 with 5:36 left in the third. Hattan ended the game with five points, eight rebounds and one steal.
The third continued with Fairfield regaining the lead with a free throw by Hattan, only to see West sink two free throws with 4:37 on the clock for a 25-24 LCHS lead.
The Lady Lions went back in front with a 3-pointer by Faith Donley (who finished with nine points, two rebounds, six assists and two steals) for a 27-25 advantage, LCHS tied the score once again when Ella Barry scored a put-back basket with 3:27 left in the quarter for a 27-27 score.
Fairfield and LCHS continued to exchange points with Magee hitting two free throws, followed by a jumper by West and a layup in transition from Donley. FHS broke the pattern with a put-back basket with 58 seconds left in the frame for a 33-29 advantage headed into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Lions began the fourth frame with a fury of scoring, taking a 39-31 lead and forcing LCHS to call a timeout with 6:37 left in regulation.
“I think we are very athletic, and going into this year I was looking forward to the athleticism we would have on this team, but unfortunately we’ve had three ACL tears (Mya Hamilton, Kelsey Clark, Caitlyn Quickle), but we are extremely athletic,” Stackhouse said. “High speed isn’t exactly what we want, but I commend all six girls because they played as a team, and if the game does get high tempo, their IQ kicks in and they play together.”
Following a break in play due to issues with the scoreboard, FHS increased their lead to 10 points at 41-31 with a basket by Hattan, but those points were equaled with a bucket by Jade Massey with 5:36 left on the clock.
From the 3:23 mark of the fourth to the 1:39 mark of the quarter, free throws were the name of the game, as FHS held a 47-35 lead. LCHS came bask with a put-back basket by Price, but FHS regained their 10-point lead with two made free throws by Magee as FHS eventually won by a 49-44 score.
For the game, the Lady Lions totaled 26 rebounds, 15 assists, eight steals and one block. FHS was 10-of-14 from the free-throw line.
“I feel like we came out strong with a 6-2 lead, so we were ready to play from the get-go. We made some shots in the first quarter, but our shooting was off tonight, and we didn’t shoot the ball well,” LCHS head coach Whitney Lewis said. “We had some good looks at the basket, but we just weren’t able to put the ball in the basket, especially some of the ones around the rim.
“I was happy with our shot selection, especially in the first half, but we just weren’t able to finish there at the end.”
Lynchburg-Clay (2-3, 3-3) was led in scoring by West with 21 points (five rebounds), followed by Price with 12 points (six rebounds). Massey and Barry each finished with four points and three rebounds, and Macy Etienne totaled three points. LCHS was 9-of-15 from the free-throw line in the loss.
