Fairfield earns rivalry victory over Lynchburg-Clay

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lady Lions took on Highland County and conference rival Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs on Monday night and defended Grandle Gymnasium with a win, and they did so while taking three straight sets.
Fairfield won by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-19. The Lady Lions are now 7-4 overall and 5-1 in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference.
On Monday night, in the first set it was Fairfield who steadily built up their lead, as they led 21-10 in the latter stages of the opening set. Lynchburg-Clay made it 21-13 with a couple points, including an ace by Ashley Ernst, but Fairfield was too strong for the visitors toward the final stages of the first set with a serve by Paris Priest making it a 24-14 score, and the final point coming off a penalty by LCHS on the serve.
Fairfield held the lead from when the score read 2-1 until the final point was scored in the second set. That said, LCHS scored the first point of set two with a serve by Katie McLaughlin, but the Lady Lions battled back with help at the net from Layla Hattan and a once by Peyton Magee.
The score increased to 7-2 in favor of the host Lady Lions when Hattan had a kill. Later in the second set, a serve by Fairfield’s Faith Miller led to the scoring improving to 11-5 for the Lady Lions, and when the score reached 13-6, it was a serve by Priest that resulted in the seven-point advantage.
Following a timeout by LCHS, Fairfield’s Emma Fouch added a point, and when it was a 17-12 FHS lead, that came with a kill by Hattan.
Lynchburg-Clay fought back in the second set with the help of an ace by Ernst — for a 19-14 deficit — but Fairfield continued to chip away at the Lady Mustangs and add to their lead with a point from Priest and a point off a serve from Hattan.
McLaughlin of Lynchburg-Clay kept the away team in the set, but FHS broke away at the end with the final four points of the match scored by Katie Buddelmeyer, Miller (two straight serves) and an out-of-bounds hit by LCHS ended the set in favor of Fairfield, 25-16.
The third set was tied four times at 1-1, 2-2, 5-5 and 13-13, with LCHS leading in the early stages of the set. LC had an ace by Abby Pitzer for the early 2-1 lead, and after serves by Fairfield’s Magee, the Lady Lions led 4-2.
The score was all tied up at 5-5 when Allison Kohus served an ace, then with points by McLaughlin and Lainie Lunsford, it was the Lady Mustangs leading, 7-5.
LCHS held the lead up to 13-12, as Fairfield had contributions from Haley Shoemaker and an ace from Priest. The score was tied at 13 off a play from Fouch, and the Lady Lions regained the lead with a serve by Priest and a play at the net from Braylynn Haines for a 15-13 lead and a timeout by the Lady Mustangs.
LC continued to fight with points by McLaughlin, but again the Lady Lions were there with a big score from Haines and a four-point lead of 18-14.
Serves by Pitzer put LCHS back within reach of Fairfield at 18-16, but as the third set continued, the Lady Lions kept countering the Lady Mustangs with an ace by Haines, and later a kill from Hattan, for a 23-17 lead.
A kill from Priest left FHS leading at 24-18, and LC’s Lunsford scored what was their final point for a 24-19 deficit. Fairfield scored the final point and won the third set at 25-19, all while defending their home court for a 3-0 match win.
Next for Fairfield is a home SHAC match on Thursday, Sept. 24 vs. Manchester. The Lady Mustangs of LCHS will play next at home on Thursday, Sept. 24 against West Union.
