Ella Newkirk makes basket at buzzer for Fairfield win over Manchester

Fairfield sophomore Ella Newkirk took a shot at the basket as time was winding down, grabbed her own rebound and put the ball through the hoop as time expired, breaking a tied score and sending the Lady Lions to a home win by a 44-42 score.
The Lady Lions (5-4, 9-7) saw Newkirk score four points in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference win, and the lone two-point field goal scored by Newkirk was the most clutch basket made on the night. Newkirk finished the game with four points, as she was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Getting to where the Lady Lions had the chance to win at the buzzer saw them trail early in the game by a 9-6 score when the first frame came to a close. The six points scored by FHS in the first were off two 3-pointers by Emma Fouch, as she led the Lady Lions with 17 points.

In the second, both teams scored 10 points, sending the two teams to the locker room with Manchester leading 19-16 at halftime.
Fairfield had five points each from Hailey Tolle and Madison Bronner in the second frame. Tolle made three free throws on four attempts, plus a two-point basket, totaling five points for the game. Bronner scored two baskets, plus she made one free throw. Bronner finished the game with 10 points.
The Lady Lions won the third frame at 10-9, and that brought them to a 28-26 deficit after three quarters. FHS had two free throws by Newkirk, four points by Fouch, two points from Magee (who scored six total points) and two points scored by Bronner.
The game-winning fourth frame included 18 points by Fairfield and 14 points from Manchester. Besides the game-winning two points by Newkirk, Fairfield also had seven points from Fouch (including a 3-pointer), plus four points by Magee, three points by Bronner from the free-throw line and two points off a basket by Braylynn Haines.
For the game, the Lady Lions totaled 10 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and they were 15-of-23 from the free-throw line. Manchester totaled 11 two-point buckets, four 3-pointers and they finished 8-of-16 (50 percent) in their free-throw attempts.
Brooke Kennedy and Hannah Hobbs led Manchester with 15 points each.
Next for Fairfield is a non-conference game on Saturday, Jan. 25 against visiting Cincinnati Northwest with a JV start of noon.
