Dragons upset Lions for 1st win of season

WEST UNION — The Fairfield Lions never seemed to get going Friday night in Adams County, as they lost to the host West Union Dragons by a score of 56-50.
West Union (1-12, 1-19) took the lead from the first quarter and never looked back, as they led by as many as 12 going late into the fourth quarter, eventually holding on for a six point victory.
[[In-content Ad]]“Containing their penetration hurt us all night. We did not play good defense, and therefore, everything else suffered," FHS head coach Matt Carson said. "I liked that we made a run at the end of the game, but the loss in itself is disappointing.
"We have to put it behind us and look forward to the opportunity of the second season, because everybody starts that one off with a clean slate … these kids are resilient, we will bounce back.”
The Lions (7-6, 11-9) were led in scoring by junior Quentin Williams with 17 points, followed by Gage Montgomery with 10.
Brad Clay added eight points, followed by Cole Putnam and Blake Hildebrant with six. Austin Hildebrant rounded out the scoring with three points.
The regular season ended for the Lions with an 11-9 overall record, and 7-6 in the SHL, good enough for a second-place finish in the small school division of the SHL.
“We can’t let one game affect the body of work we’ve had over the long haul of the season," Carson said. "It’s my job to impress that upon these guys this week in practice.
"Tournament time is a fun time of the year, and we’ll be ready to tip it up on Tuesday (Feb. 28).”
In JV action, the Lions finished the season at 18-2 overall, with a perfect 13-0 SHL record. They defeated the Dragons, 69-63. Ryan Bates led all scorers on the night with 28 points for the Lions.
Speaking of Tuesday Feb. 28, the Lions will meet the Manchester Greyhounds for a third time this season, at 6:15 at Lucasville Valley High School in a sectional final game.
Pre-sale tickets will be available at the school and are $5. Twenty-five percent of the ticket sales bought from the school will go directly into the school’s athletic department fund.
