Wilkin announces funds for Eastern Local Schools
State Senator Shane Wilkin (R-Hillsboro) announced that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has awarded a Boating Education and Safety grant to Eastern Local Schools in Pike County. The program's goal is to strengthen local boating education programs for youth and adult residents.
Eastern Local Schools runs the Conservation Science Curriculum and Science Club to engage students in conservation and outdoor recreation. The club will use its $24,577.50 in grant funding to purchase equipment needed for its new Introduction to Canoeing course.
"Keeping our children safe on the water is critical, and that work begins with education," Wilkin said. "I'm excited for the students at Eastern Local Schools who will learn these safety skills while enjoying a new opportunity outside the classroom."
Ten organizations across the state have been awarded up to $30,000 each. This year, the grants total more than $250,000. The Boating Education and Safety grants are funded by Ohio’s recreational boaters through the Waterways Safety Fund, which is comprised of a share of the state motor fuel tax, watercraft registration and titling fees, and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Senator Shane Wilkin represents the 17th District in the Ohio Senate, which encompasses Fayette, Gallia, Highland, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross and Vinton counties, as well as part of Perry County. Learn more at www.OhioSenate.gov/Wilkin.
