Hillsboro Science Club hosts inaugural showcase

The newly formed Hillsboro High School Science Club held its first Southern Ohio Science Showcase on Saturday, May 11 in the high school cafeteria. The Showcase was open to all area schools, and over 60 students from Greenfield, East Clinton, Miami Trace, Hillsboro and Jackson attended.
Much more than a typical science fair, this Showcase consisted of four categories (Art of Science, Rube Goldberg construction, Sound of Science and Trebuchet construction), and children in grades four through 12 were eligible to compete. Judges for each category were volunteers from the community and teachers from participating schools.
Students winning first place in the Rube Goldberg construction categories were Breslyn Lyons, Owen Sykes, Chris Lanning and Gavin Koehler; in the Sound of Science categories were Breslyn Lyons, Owen Sykes, Andrew Tomko and Zach Burwinkel; and in the Art of Science categories were Valeria Sofia Mota-Ayala, Myleigh Manson and Chelsie Hacker.
Special thanks to Amy Schneider, Dr. Robert Sharp, Ken Storer, Amanda Martinez, Amy Craig, Jeff McRill, Matt Garman and Jim Tomko for volunteering their time and expertise to make this first competition a success. Many Hillsboro teachers and students also dedicated much appreciated time and energy in planning and carrying out this competition.
The Showcase acted as a fundraiser for the Hillsboro Science Club, and many local businesses donated funds, services and supplies that were invaluable to the success of the event. The HHS Science Club plans to make this an annual celebration of science and hopes to host even more schools in the coming years. Congratulations and exceptional work to our 2024 participants.
