John Francis Atkinson, 81 of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024 at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born June 23, 1942 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late John Joseph and Mary (Mulroy) Atkinson.
He spent his working career in many states, including Florida, Indiana and Ohio. He loved working as a rock miner and enjoyed everyone that he worked with. He spent his retirement years spending time with his family and watching his family grow.
He is survived by four children, Julieanna (Richard) Graham of Naples, Fla., John (Traci) Atkinson of Tampa, Fla., Michael (Kathy) Atkinson of Parrish, Fla. and Tim (Danielle) Atkinson of Hillsboro; nine grandchildren, Brooke (Robert) Pufall, Jacob (Rose) Atkinson, Richard Graham, Matthew (Amber) Graham, Bradley (Chandler) Atkinson, Amanda (Jason) Barnett, April Atkinson, Shannen Atkinson and Conner Atkinson; eight great-grandchildren, Ryan, Raelyn, Jermaine, Ella, Kenny, John, Cooper and Nico; a niece, Kimberly; and a nephew, Robert.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Carole Maude (Beinart) Atkinson, who passed away Nov. 13, 2018; a son, Kenneth Atkinson; and a sister, Agnes Bonkenburg.
Visitation will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. The Rev. Tom Zile will officiate. Services will be 1 p.m. Feb. 15 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery.
