MANCHESTER - The Whiteoak Wildcats still control their own destiny for a chance at another Southern Hills League title. The route to the championship took a rocky turn Thursday as the Wildcats gained eight hits, but only scored three runs, in a 13-3, six inning road defeat to the Manchester Greyhounds.
The Wildcats, who stand at 7-10 overall, and 5-3 in the SHL, allowed Manchester to score seven runs in the third, along with two in the first and a combined four runs in the last three innings.
"If we play like we did Tuesday night at Fairfiled we win the league," WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. "If we play like we did (Thursday), we dont. It is all about playing every pitch, wanting the ball hit to you, and expecting the ball to be hit to you on defense."
Of the 13 runs scored by the Greyhounds, eight runs were unearned.
"You don't beat anyone by making seven errors in a game," Veidt said.
WHS added their runs in the top of the second and fifth innings.
On the mound Whiteoak senior Ben Barnett suffered his first loss of the year. The senior hurler went six innings as his record now stands at 4-1. Barnett allowed five earned runs, on 11 hits and two walks. The senior struck out three.
Barnett was hot from the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Teammate Zach Docter was 2-for-4, including a double, with one RBI. Gage Carraher finished with a double and one run. Ethan Eyre also had a hit, and added an RBI. Ryan Emery was 1-for-1 with one run scored.
"Ryan (Emery) had a fantastic game for us both offensively and defensively," Veidt said. "Its also not a coincidence that he showed great vocal leadership."
Whiteak will host the Fayetteville Rockets Friday at 5 p.m. in SHL play.
