Vickie 'Vicus' Sue Gaines
Vickie “Vicus” Sue Gaines, 67, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023 at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born July 15, 1956, in Dayton, the daughter of the late Robert and Carol (Seyfferle) Gephart.
Vickie was a 1975 graduate of Wayne High School in Huber Heights. In September of 1975, Vickie married the love of her life, Lee Wayne Gaines, who passed away April 17, 2012.
Vickie worked at the Oakland Nursing Home/Laurels of Hillsboro for 15 years, and she retired in 2019 after working many years as the Activity Director of the Edith Brown Pavilion at Highland District Hospital and Alzheimer’s support group leader. Vickie received the Elizabeth Bolles Outstanding Service Award for her dedication and hard work in providing Alzheimer's education and support to her community.
She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and she enjoyed gardening, fishing, bingo and going to the casino. She loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends. She will be greatly missed.
Vickie is survived by six children, Paula (Robert) Thomas of Hillsboro, Paul (Ryan Moehlman) Gaines of Hillsboro, Patrick (Valerie) Gaines of Hillsboro, Michael (Tessa) Gaines of Hillsboro, Douglas Hantleman of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Robert Hantleman of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Chloé Gaines, Alli Gaines, McKenzie Gaines, Delaney Gaines, Madison Carroll, Adalyn Gaines, Lathun Gaines, Audrey Gaines, Levi Carroll and Abigail Gaines; four siblings, Debbie Braun, Karen (Dave) Day, Richard (Diane) Gephart and Danny (Linda) Gephart; a special nephew, Zac Laura; and numerous more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Wayne Gaines; daughter, Shannon Gaines; and a brother, Bobby Gephart.
Gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home. Celebration of Vickie’s life will take place Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial in the Marshall Cemetery will be held on a later date at the convenience of the family.
