SSCC soccer team headed to national tournament

Patriots finish regular season as OCAC champs with 15-1-2 record

 

It’s off to Vermont for the Southern State Community College men’s soccer team. The SSCC Patriots were awarded a bid to play in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Soccer National Championship Nov. 5-7.

“It’s been an outstanding season and I’m very proud of these young men on their effort and look forward to Vermont,” said Adam Holbrook, SSCC athletic director. “When I started in June as athletic director, I had no idea we would qualify for the national tournament in November. Men’s soccer has given me both my first OCAC championship and national tournament experience.”

The Patriots finished the regular season claiming their second consecutive title as Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference (OCAC) champs with an impressive 15 wins, one loss and two tied matches. In conference play, Southern State was undefeated.

The No. 6 seeded Southern State Patriots will take on No. 3 Briarcliffe College of Bethpage, N.Y., 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, facing off on the grounds of Vermont Technical College in Burlington, Vt.

Other teams who received bids for tournament play include No. 1 University of Maine at Fort Kent (Fort Kent, Maine), No. 2 Lindenwood University (Belleville, Ill.), No. 4 Pennsylvania College of Technology (Williamsport, Pa.), No. 5 Concordia College (Selma, Ala.), No. 7 NHTI (Concord, N.H.) and No. 8 Vermont Technical College (Burlington, Vt.).

SSCC forward Tyler Jimison was named this week’s OCAC Athlete of the Week. “Jimison scored two goals in a 4-1 win over Crown College from Powell, Tenn., on Oct. 1,” the release stated. “The two goals brought his season total to 15, which tied the Southern State Community College record for goals in a season. 

"The next day, Jimison scored one goal in a 2-1 victory over Appalachian Bible College, breaking the school record for goals in a season.”

Embarking on the tournament journey will be Head Coach Josh Thoroman; Assistant Coach Sean Sweeney; Athletic Director Adam Holbrook; sophomore team members Chase Burns (graduate of North Adams H.S.), Wyatt Chaney (Eastern Brown H.S.), Caleb Conn (Miami Trace H.S.), Jordan England (Ripley H.S.), Tyler Jimison (North Adams H.S.), Nathan Rollyson (Wilmington H.S.) and Jeff Strausbaugh (Unioto H.S.); and freshmen team members Jeremy Anderson (Fairfield H.S.), Cody Claypool (Miami Trace H.S.), Josh Henry (Greenfield McClain H.S.), Gregory Lawson (Blanchester H.S.), Shane Lienberger (Glen Este H.S.), Logan Reinhardt (Glen Este H.S.), Jordan Rife (Washington H.S.), Taylor Scott (Unioto H.S.), Josh Wagle (North Adams H.S.) and Wes Yeomans (Lynchburg-Clay H.S.).

The team will depart 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, from Southern State’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro, to begin the 14-hour drive to Vermont.
