SSCC Soccer: Patriots top in conference
Southern State routs rival OCU in a 9-0 shutout
On Labor Day, while many Americans were enjoying the day off from work, the Southern State Community College men’s soccer team was hard at work defending their Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference (OCAC) title versus arch rival Ohio Christian University (OCU).
The Patriots put together a total team effort, earning the shutout while placing six different players in the scoring column. The win moves the Patriots into sole possession of first place in the conference. OCU, which posted a 7-2 victory Sept. 3 over Valor Christian College, fell to second in the OCAC standings.
“Our number one goal this season is to repeat as Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference champions,” said Josh Thoroman, SSCC head coach. “After today’s game, we feel like we are in a great position to win another conference title”
Sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Conn (graduate of Miami Trace H.S.) and the Patriot defense earned the shutout. The defense was led once again by sophomore co-captain Wyatt Chaney (Eastern Brown H.S.), sophomore Chase Burns (North Adams H.S.), freshman Jeremy Anderson (Fairfield Union H.S.), freshman Gregory Lawson (Blanchester H.S.) and freshman Shane Leinberger (Glen Este H.S.).
“We wanted to make a statement today and I think we accomplished that,” said Sean Sweeney, SSCC assistant coach.
Scoring for the Patriots came from: Burns assisted by Wes Yeomans (Lynchburg-Clay H.S.) and Leinberger in the 8th minute; Tyler Jimison (North Adams H.S.) in the 8th minute; Jeff Strausbaugh (Unioto H.S.) assisted by Jimison in the 40th minute; Jimison assisted by Lawson in the 44th minute; Nathan Rollyson (Wilmington H.S.) in the 47th minute; Rollyson assisted by Burns in the 60th minute; Strausbaugh assisted by Josh Henry (Greenfield McClain H.S.) in the 71st minute; Lawson in the 72nd minute; and Josh Wagle (North Adams H.S.) assisted by Chaney in the 85th minute.
Last year was the inaugural season for the Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference. Southern State won the 2009 OCAC regular season title and the conference tournament title, the “OCAC Cup.” With the win against OCU, Southern State men’s soccer has now won 10 consecutive OCAC games.
