SSCC Soccer: Patriots shut out Kuyper 3-0
Southern State’s Claypool earns first collegiate shutout
The Southern State Community College men’s soccer team traveled Sept. 17 to Grand Rapids, Mich., and defeated Kuyper College 3-0. The game—the first-ever meeting between Southern State and Kuyper—was played on the new turf field in Davenport University’s new soccer stadium.
Freshman goalkeeper Cody Claypool (graduate of Miami Trace H.S.) earned his second start of the season and made the most of it by recording the shutout. The Southern State defense was dominant, limiting Kuyper to nine shots. Four shots were on goal and Claypool saved all four.
Defensively, the Patriots were led by another strong showing from the back four.
“I was pleased with the work from Chase Burns (North Adams H.S.),” said Josh Thoroman, SSCC head coach. “His play down the wings helped feed the strikers.
Sophomore Tyler Jimison (North Adams H.S.) recorded the hat trick, scoring all three Patriot goals. On Jimison’s scoring, Southern State led 2-0 at the half. Jimison’s third came from a throw deep in Kuyper’s end. The Patriots just missed adding to the total when sophomore Nate Rollyson’s (Wilmington H.S.) headed shot hit the underside of the cross bar.
With the Sept. 17 win, the Southern State soccer team moves to 5-1 on the season. The Patriots will next be in action Sept. 21 when they host Kentucky Christian University.
