Second half dominance leads to LC win over McClain

GREENFIELD — The Highland County rivalry between the McClain Lady Tigers and Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs went to the way of LC, as they dominated the final 40 minutes for a 6-0 non-league win Wednesday at McClain Field.
Neither team could get their offenses running in the first half, but both used their stifling defense to keep the game scoreless after 40 minutes of play in each team's second game of the season.
Entering the game MHS was 1-0 and LC was 0-1.
But the second half was a completely different story with LC answering the challenge of the coaches Dennis West and Chris Tipton at the half.
"We didn't wake up until the second half, but you have to credit the defense of McClain," West said. "It seems they play a defensive oriented game, and their focus is to make it difficult for teams to score. That's what it seems like to me. At one point, they had nine girls back on defense."
Then West and Tipton spoke about their challenge to their team at the half.
"We told them they had to execute and Chris went over a few things with them, and for the most part, they answered."
The tale of two halves for LC was evident, especially to Tipton, as he said he saw two different teams in each half for the Lady Mustangs.
"The team I saw out there in the second half was the team I've seen in the preseason," he said.
West agreed.
"Seemed like we had an awakening in the second half," West said. "I think we wore McClain down in the second half."
LC junior midfielder Karen Hilt scored first with 35:53 left, as her goal was followed with a goal from senior forward Lindsay Rosselott for the 2-0 lead.
The two-goal lead turned into a three-goal advantage with senior Meredith Fittro kicking the ball into the back of the net, leaving 22:55 in the game.
Fittro scored again (10:18) on a 20-yard kick for a four-goal lead.
Hilt added the fifth and sixth goals in the final minute on a 35-yard kick and the last goal coming from 15 yards out.
LC had 30 shots at goal Wednesday.
In the first half, Taylor Faulconer came up big for the Lady Tigers with numerous saves to keep the game tied at zero.
LC senior keeper Shelbi Halverson had four saves.
"The girls who got goals for us (Wednesday) are our main goal scorers," West said. "The girls did what we wanted them to do, and we go through a difficult conditioning program to be ready for tough defensive games like we had. Our goal is to out-run teams, and that is easier to do with offensive pressure."
LC (1-1) will face Peebles Friday. MHS (1-1) will host MP Thursday.

Western Brown 4, Lynchburg-Clay 2
In their season opener, the Lady Mustangs fell to Western Brown, 4-2, at WBHS.
Scoring goals for LC (both in the second half) were sophomore Taylor Scott and senior Breian West.
The goals came at the 32:48 and 23:29 marks of the final 40 minutes.
The assist on Scott's goal was credited to Karen Hilt.
LC keeper Shelbi Halverson had two saves.
