Pioneers upend McClain, 77-7

The state-ranked (6th) Jonathan Alder Pioneers cruised to a 50-0 halftime lead over the McClain Tigers Friday at Alder on their way to a 77-7 non-league victory.
Quarterback Graham Johnston capped the first-half onslaught with a touchdown run with 38 seconds left in the half. Nick Smith connected on the PAT to make the score 50-0 at the break.
Johnston also scored on two first-quarter touchdown runs for the Pioneers, a 53-yarder and a one-yard plunge. He passed for another TD to J.C. Artrip for a 50-yard scoring strike.
Austin Dehart added touchdown runs from 21 yards, five yards and 29 yards, as the Tigers defense could not stop the Alder offense. Zach Matracia got the Tigers on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a 75-yard touchdown. Jacob Dillon connected on the extra point to make it a 50-7 game.
The Pioneers added three touchdowns in the third quarter and one more for good measure in the fourth to make it a 77-7 game.
Since 2005, Alder has defeated McClain on an annual basis, by scores of:
• 2005 – JA 55, MHS 7;
• 2006– JA 48, MHS 0;
• 2007 – JA 33, MHS 10;
• 2008 – JA 53, MHS 7; and,
• 2009 – JA 43, MHS 0.
The Pioneers improved to 8-1 overall this season and are 4-1 against South Central Ohio League teams this year. They lost to Clinton-Massie, 28-27. In their first eight games, Alder outscored their opponents, 339-108, and was fifth in the 2010 Harbin Rankings in Division IV, Region 16 going into the game.
McClain falls to 5-4 with the loss. The Tigers take on the Hillsboro Indians (2-7) on Oct. 29 in the annual Rotary Bowl cross-county battle.
