Mustangs improve to 3-0, defeat PHS Indians

DODSONVILLE — Friday was a winning night for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs boys soccer team. In fact, they, like the girls squad, controlled the first half for a 6-2 win over the Peebles Indians at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
The wins give LC and undefeated mark of 3-0 on the season, with a Southern Hills League record of 1-0 as this was their first league match of the season.
LC scored all six goals in the first half in the winning effort.
"What an excellent first half by our team," LC coach Dennis West said. "We played most of our younger guys in the second half. We moved the ball, but we couldn't score."
But the game was won it the first 40 minutes.
The first LC goal came from junior Tyler Davidson with 33:42 left in the half of a cross kick by junior Wesley Pierson.
Gage Waits, a freshman, scored his goal with 31:39 left in the first half from a cross kick by Michael Smith. Pierson and Smith were credited with assists.
LC junior Kaikue Costa scored the first of his two goals at the 28:26 mark of the opening half with a pass and assist from freshman Jeremiah Hacker.
Davidson netted his second goal with 12:55 left in the half, as he beat the Peebles' defenders, placing the ball into the back of the goal.
Costa's second goal came with 8:42 remaining and Hacker scored LC's final goal with 2:15 left in the first 40 minutes of action.
Colin Creek, a senior, had seven saves for the Mustangs in 80 minutes of play.
Peebles out-shot the Mustangs, 24-19.
"We are playing well and want to continue the effort this week," West said.
The two PHS goals were from Anthony Seaman with 7:33 left in the first half and Jonathan Pryor with 7:30 left in the second half.
The PHS keeper had two saves.
LC (1-0, 3-0) will travel to Eastern Brown Monday and host Ripley on Wednesday.
