Mustangs drop close game to open season

CHILLICOTHE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs began their 2010-11 boys basketball season with a very close game but ended up on the losing end, falling to the Huntington Huntsmen, 47-44 Friday at Zane Trace High School in the Zane Trace Tip-Off Classic.
For a majority of the season-opening game, neither team led by more than three points, with the score being tied at 16 after the first quarter.
LC led 29-27 at the half, but the Huntsmen and Mustangs were tied, once again, after the third quarter at 37.
In the final frame, Huntington outscored LC 10-7 to take home the win.
"I was pleased with our defensive effort, but on offense we turned the ball over too much and didn't play team basketball," LC head coach Jason McLaughlin said.
LC senior Austin Fawley led the Mustangs with 19 points, scoring 17 in the first half. Dylan Noll had 17 points and 13 rebounds and was named Player of the Game for the Mustangs.
LC will play again on Dec. 10 when they host Highland County rival Whiteoak.
