LC adds another shutout; wins sectional title

DODSONVILLE — A slow start offensively, cold weather caused by the wind, and not even the loud sound of vuvuzelas from the Peebles student section were enough to sidetrack the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs Thursday in the Division II SE District Sectional finals.
One goal in each half, along with high quality defense, gave LC a 2-0 win over the Lady Indians. The sectional win was the 10th shutout of the season for LC.
LC (12-5-1) shutout the Lady Indians last Monday in the next-to-last game of the regular season. This past Monday, LC shutout the Lady Dragons of West Union to start the postseason, 13-0.
The win puts LC in the district semifinals, taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. at Jackson High School. LC will face Unioto, who defeated Fairfield-Union 2-0 on Thursday at UHS.
On Thursday, LC scored once in each 40-minute half, and the goals came from sophomore forward Taylor Scott, who was coming off a six-goal game in the opening round of the postseason, giving her eight goals this tournament.
Scott's first goal put LC up 1-0 with 13:05 remaining in the first half off a rebound kick by junior Karen Hilt, which bounced off the keeper of Peebles.
In that opening half, LC defender Molly Greenawalt had some aggressive play, keeping the ball away from PHS.
The second half mirrored the first half in a way, but LC had more opportunities to gain goals, although the strong winds sent the ball flying over the top of the goal.
The scoring drought of the second half was replenished with 12:34 left in regulation with Scott knocking in the ball, near the goal, past the Peebles keeper. The assist went to sophomore Hannah West.
In the final 11 minutes, each team received a yellow card.
LC out-shot PHS 29-3, with all three PHS shots taking place in the first half. LC had 11 shots in the same half.
LC senior keeper Shelbi Halverson had three saves.
