Lady Indians open season with dominating SCOL win

The Hillsboro Lady Indians started their pursuit of the South Central Ohio League title in winning fashion Tuesday evening at Richards Memorial Field. HHS dominated all aspects of the game against the Miami Trace Lady Panthers for a 10-0 shutout victory to open up the 2010 season.
HHS (1-0, 1-0) had the game well in hand after the first 40 minutes with a seven-goal outburst, including four from junior Leah Pence in the opening half.
"Leah put in a good effort, but she does that every game," HHS coach Leslie Molen said.
Senior Ashley Meyer scored one goal in the first half, along with sophomore Taylor Moberly. Freshman Madison Colliver scored once in the first half for her first varsity goal. Colliver also had one assist in the first half.
Hillsboro senior Lauren Colliver produced in the first half with an assist.
"We didn't know what to expect with this being our first game," Molen said. "We lost a lot of seniors from last year, and we had some new kids filling in those spots.
"Offensively, we didn't convert a lot of opportunities. We are not seeing things right just yet."
HHS scored three more times in the second to extend their lead.
Lauren Colliver scored two goals in the second half, and Pence added to her game totals by scoring her fifth goal, giving the Lady Indians a 10-goal advantage over their SCOL rival.
One of Lauren's second-half goals came off a direct kick.
Madison Colliver recored an assist in the final 40 minutes.
Junior keeper Sara Sexton had three saves at goal.
"Defensively, we were flat, but getting the first win is awesome, especially being a league win," Molen said. "It was a good league win, and Miami Trace is still somewhat a young program. They played hard and were competitive. They (MT) never gave up, despite the score, and they kept pressing us."
Molen spoke about the play of sophomore Taylor Stanforth in her first varsity game on the defensive side of the field.
"Taylor played well, and I was pleased with her effort against Miami Trace," she said.
The Lady Indians stand at 1-0 overall (1-0, SCOL) and will play another league game on Thursday, Aug. 26 at Richards Memorial Field following the boys' game against the Washington Lady Blue Lions.
