Lady Falcons hand MHS first loss

CLARKSVILLE — Not being able to break the defense of the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons, the Lady Tigers of McClain suffered their first loss of the season, a South Central Ohio League loss, 44-28 at Clinton-Massie High School.
The story of the game was the Massie defense, who held the Lady Tigers scoreless in the third quarter. In the first half, CM primarily used a zone defense, but in the third switched to some man-to-man, along with their zone.
With the defense of CM keeping the Lady Tigers away from the paint, MHS had trouble getting the ball to leading scorer and senior Chrissy Cobb.
Cobb, who was averaging 19 ppg in the first three games, was held scoreless for the first three quarters, but rallied to lead MHS in scoring with 10 fourth-quarter points, including a 3-pointer and a retro three-point play.
Senior Frankie Wise had nine points for the game, including a team-high seven points in the first half. Junior Sammy Rooks scored four points.
Also scoring for MHS were junior Brittany Mullikin and senior Megan Hogle had two points each. Junior Jenna Perie had one point.
MHS (1-1, 3-1), who never led in the game, trailed by two points after the first eight minutes.
In the first frame, CM took a 5-0 lead with a basket by Brooke Sargent and a 3-pointer from Jordanne Gambill. Gambill recently signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Division II Kentucky Wesleyan.
After points by Wise, Gambill sank two free throws.
Later in the first frame, Wise sank a 3-pointer, cutting the CM lead to 9-7. Rooks hit a long-range jumper to cut the Lady Falcons' lead back to two, once again, at 11-9.
Perie was the first to score in the second quarter, followed with Hogle bringing the Lady Tigers within one point of tying the game with just under six minutes left in the opening half.
CM, 1-1 in the SCOL, outscored the Lady Tigers 10-5 in the second frame.
The third quarter was all Lady Falcons, turning the quarter into a 10-0 run.
Cobb started the final quarter with a 3-pointer, cutting the CM lead to 31-17. Rooks followed with a jumper, but the Lady Falcons answered with a 7-0 run.
Gambill put MHS up 40-24 with a long-range jumper. Gambill had 13 points.
MHS shot 10-of-49 from the floor for 20 percent with 17 rebounds, 15 turnovers and 15 fouls. CM was 15-of-18 shooting, with 18 rebounds and 15 turnovers.
The loss drops MHS to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the SCOL. The Lady Tigers will take the court again on Saturday, Dec. 11 when they host the Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles at 1:30 p.m. in SCOL play.[[In-content Ad]]
